Reacting to Criticism

Read 1 Samuel 16:7, Hebrews 4:12 and 2 Samuel 16:5-14.

When you receive criticism from somebody, what is usually your first reaction? Do you just lash back at them and try to be much meaner and crueler than them? How often do you stop to consider what might be motivating that person’s criticism of you?

These are "Hard Questions" to ask ourselves, aren't they? This week, at church our pastor talked about Criticism. Growing up, I had such a hard time accepting Criticism from classmates at school. I had all of "My Feelers" on the outside. Unfortunately, it doesn't take long for these soft and cuddly "Feelers" to go away. This leaves a lot of wounded, hurt, and angry people, doesn't it?

What each of us need to do is look deeper into that person when they lash out at us. Asking them why they need to be so cruel? Are they upset with someone or something? Or what has caused them to feel so angry all of the time? If none of this works, just do not respond, smile, and give them a compliment. Yes, that's correct... a compliment. Maybe it has been a long while since they have heard one. This is what I've started doing and it does work!

So, the next time you are feeling attacked by someone; STOP and do not react with vengeance! It's an opportunity for you to administer God's Love and Grace to them.
