Dealing with Extended Family at the Holidays

Look at Jesus’ words recorded in Matthew 5:3-12 could serve us well as we prepare for “extended” family time with relatives... Blessed are the poor in spirit… Before stepping into your family gathering, take a deep breath, and remember that it’s not about you and me. It’s about Jesus and the other people in your life. Blessed are those that mourn… Remember that everything, including your family, is temporary. This reality can help you recognize that everyone in your family needs the unconditional love of God. Blessed are the meek… Don’t insist that your thoughts and opinions dominate the discussion. Let others have the floor. If Jesus could sacrifice His life so that we could be reconciled to God, surely we can sacrifice our agendas in order to promote harmony in the home. Blessed are those who thirst for righteousness… Look for and celebrate the good. Be positive; dispel the negative. Affirm your mother, your father or your children for their best traits. Focus on what is noble, true and right.
